What good is research if your students can’t eat?

Here’s my description: Everyone is searching for the magical unicorn to “fix” higher education. The truth of the matter is that society needs higher education to solve a problem for which higher education was never designed to address – a world where the majority of k-12 students are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Educating students today demands a very different model and priorities than educating college students required a generation ago. Today’s students need an education rooted in reality. In this session, I will present a vision for higher education that is rooted not in research or elitism, but in the reality of the lives that our students live.
