2012 was the year Higher Education was said to have changed forever. The arrival of Coursera and Udacity (with EDX and FutureLearn soon after) was heralded as a watershed moment for Higher Education. While the hype cycle ran its course, MOOC platforms provided millions around the world with access to top educators. MOOC platforms dramatically expanded the reach of universities and led to many innovations that are changing the higher ed landscape. Be it low-cost degrees, accredited pathways, a proliferation of job-focused credentials, learners have more than ever to choose from. Not just individuals, now companies and governments are waking up to the potential of online learning as they grapple with the challenges of digital transformation, demographic shifts, and income inequality.
