Reinventing Vocational Training for the Digital Age
Vocational Education and Training (VET) with its strong focus on employability is a high priority of policy makers worldwide. Many of them look at Germany's efficient vocational training system. In part for good reasons: Even during the post 2008 crisis, youth unemployment in Germany and other “VET countries” remained remarkably low. However, even in Europe VET is under pressure: The drift towards more academic education is strong, new work with its digital jobs requires new education, increasing skill demands leave too many youth behind. It will not be enough to simply continue the successful system from the 20th century. It rather will be necessary to reinvent vocational training for the digital age. In this session, we look at how to build on the success factors of the past and adapt to the future requirements, securing a high level of employability, providing the necessary skills for the labour market and ensuring enough opportunities for all young people regardless of their social background.
