The Future of Higher Education: Lessons from the Transformation of the Newspaper, Film, and Music Industries
In general, for-profits change by replacement. When existing organizations become dated or unprofitable, they are replaced by new organizations. In contrast, not-for-profits tend to change more slowly by repair or reform of the existing organizations. This session reports on a study of three knowledge organizations- newspapers, motion pictures, and music- which faced the same demographic, economic and technological challenges as higher education but changed far more quickly. This session discusses the lessons their transformation offers to Postsecondary education.
